Thrifty Threads

For this week’s thrifty threads I wanted a look that was fairly basic (black skirt*) with a pop of color. I found the skirt during my last Goodwill venture. The lilac top is from Gap’s Superfine collection and ultra soft. Though I’m not a huge fan of purple, the cut out sandals by Miss Me are one of the faves in my closet. I kept the accessories rather simple by layering necklaces and dressing my wrists with a chunky bangle and pearls.

Breakdown:
Top: Gap, $1, thrifted
Skirt: H&M, $1, thrifted
Shoes: Miss Me via DSW, $35
Accessories: combo of flea market and gifted pieces
*the skirt really isn’t that short, it just hiked up when I sat down. I promise :)

Low Priced Fashion at Any Cost?

Did anyone happen to catch Friday’s episode of Nightline? The opening segment focused on the H&M empire. Just a few quick facts about the Swedish company: it’s the third largest clothing retailer in the world, they have 74,000 employees and are currently in 37 countries.

But what really struck me was the footage of ravenous shoppers pushing, shoving and elbowing each other to get their hands on the low-priced goods from the H&M collaborations with Jimmy Choo, Roberto Cavalli and Sonia Rykiel. One woman in the video described the mayhem as, “animals in a store fighting for a sweater…it’s not normal, it’s unbelievable.”

I’ve never gone to H&M or Target for the first day of their designer collaborations sales, as I can only imagine how insane it would be. I’m just not willing to come to blows over an item of clothing.

We’re all eager to save a penny but it seems like all sense of civility goes out the window when people are faced with door-buster prices.

Do you think people go too far when it comes to nabbing designer duds for less? Did anyone encounter overzealous shoppers at this weekend’s Zac Posen for Target sale?

Kate Mara in H&M The Garden Collection

Earlier this year H&M gave us a sneak peek at their eco-friendly Garden Collection. It finally hit stores last week and consists of organic cotton, organic linen and recycled polyester.

Actress Kate Mara was recently spotted wearing the $39 red rosette dress from the line.

This has to be my favorite dress from the Garden Collection. And her look can easily be recreated with nude peep toe heels and a basic black clutch. Perfect for a festive party look.

Asos Princess Peep Toe Shoe, $42.74.
Aldo Steiniger Clutch, $35.

Has anyone checked out H&M’s Garden Collection in stores or better yet, have you purchased anything?
